Two Carrollton High School nominees cleared the state selection process to be named finalists for the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program, an elite honor by any measure.

The Governor’s Honors Program, known as GHP, is a four-week residential summer program for gifted and talented rising high school juniors and seniors. A function of the Georgia Department of Education, the program will take place on the campus of Berry College this year from June 17 to July 14.

High school sophomores and juniors in public, private and home schools are eligible for nomination in one of 20 subject areas.

The two finalists from Carrollton are sophomore Eli Nunez and junior Leyna Robinson. Eli will study Engineering and Leyna Communicative Arts.

Carrollton High School produced three finalists for the program in 2012 and 2013, four in 2014, one finalist in 2015, four in 2016, and five in 2017.

“Having one student from your school make Governor’s Honors is impressive, so we were especially pleased that for several years now more students are given this exceptional opportunity,” said David Brooks, CHS principal. “Typically only magnet schools produce this kind of consistent participation.”
