The Carrollton Board of Education Tuesday night tentatively adopted a slightly different approach to the school calendar. Referred to as a “balanced calendar,” the proposal begins the first week of August similar to the current school year and provides a full-week fall and full-week winter break in October and February in addition to the traditional Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring breaks. School will still end before Memorial Day.

Before Tuesday night’s meeting, the school board met for a work session last week to foster thorough discussion of the proposal.

“Although many times our school system is one of the first to try something different, in this case we are not,” Dr. Mark Albertus, superintendent, said during that meeting. “Many school systems have already adopted this schedule and all report it has been very well received by both teachers and parents.” He noted this calendar proposal also was shared with each school’s School Governance Team, made up of parents and teachers, and resulted in positive feedback.

The proposal has been tabled for public review before formal adoption at the Feb. 12 board meeting. VIEW THE CALENDAR
