Hunter Maddox was awarded as the 2019 recipient of the PRECOA Charles W. Wynn Memorial Scholarship

Jones-Wynn Funeral Home is a business and a family ministry that has touched the lives of thousands of Villa Ricans and local families, so few would be surprised to find that even 18 years after his death, Charles Wynn is still making a positive impact on the community and the future of funeral service.

The Charles W. Wynn Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to a funeral service student each year in memory of Charles Wynn, who passed away in 2001 at the young age of 49.

It is fitting that the legacy of Charles Wynn continues to make a positive impact, since throughout his career, he was actively involved in his community, as a member of the Optimist Club, the Sertoma Club and the Lions Club, where he held several offices. He was a member of both the Carroll County and Douglas County Chambers of Commerce and served on the Board of Directors for Regions Bank and Oak Mountain Academy. He served as president of the Villa Rica Downtown Authority and he sponsored the annual Easter Sunrise Service and Breakfast in Villa Rica for 13 years. He was also a Mason and Shriner.

Charles Wynn was an alumnus of Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service, where he was an honor graduate and a member and past president of the Pi Sigma Eta National Honor Fraternity. He was a member of the Georgia Funeral Directors Association and served as president from 1991 to 1992.  He was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association and served as president of the Georgia Cemetery Association from 1989 to 1990. He served on the advisory board of United Family Life Insurance Company and was named in the National Who’s Who of Businessmen of America.

Mr. Wynn, of Jones-Wynn Funeral Home & Meadowbrook Memory Gardens, was a well-respected funeral director and cemeterian in the West Georgia area and also in the State of Georgia. The Charles W. Wynn Memorial Scholarship honors Charles Wynn’s service to the funeral profession and to his community.

Maddox was presented with the award at the Georgia Funeral Directors Association Annual Convention. Charles’ daughter, Ellen Wynn McBrayer, presented the scholarship this year.

“We are proud that the Charles Wynn Scholarship is awarded every year in his memory,” Dana Jones-Wynn said. “We have a strong belief in funeral service, and being able to help the future of funeral service in his memory would bring him great joy, just as it does us. He gave his entire life to funeral service, and we can’t think of a better way to pay it forward.”

Charles Wynn would be honored to know his passion and love for life, helping others, and funeral service still makes a positive impact on others’ lives.
