CARROLLTON, GA –  Carrollton High School seniors Ansley Allyn, John Robert Ray and Harrison Rogers have been named Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program, David Brooks, CHS principal, announced earlier this week. They each will be presented a Letter of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corp., which conducts the program.

Being recognized for their exceptional academic promise are a total of about 34,000 Commended Students nationwide. Although they will not continue in the 2020 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students are among the top 2 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 competition by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Ansley, the daughter of Stephanie Allyn of Villa Rica and the late Tiger Allyn, is an involved band student who also interns for the band program.

John Robert Ray, the son of Shannon and Heather Ray of Carrollton, is also in the band, is a key contributor on the CHS Academic Team, is dually enrolled at the University of West Georgia, and is an intern in the Southwire Engineering Academy.

Harrison, the son of Steve and Angie Rogers of Bowdon, is a state champion debater for the Trojans and member of the tennis team. He is also dually enrolled at UWG.

Last week, classmate Audrey Best was named a National Merit semifinalist who will find out in February whether she will continue on in the competition for National Merit scholarships.

“All of these students are among our top academic performers, but are also well-rounded, versatile students involved in many school activities,” said Brooks. “That is a combination for life success that will serve them well. We are very proud of all of them.”
