Carrollton, GA—SyncGlobal Telecom and Carroll Electric Membership Cooperative recently co-hosted the telecommunication provider’s annual 811 Day Meeting Tuesday, Aug. 11. A virtual meeting was held to detail pertinent information on safe digging and recognize companies who work with care near underground utilities. Among those recognized were Southern Company Gas, City of Carrollton Water and Sewer and Lions Den Construction.

On behalf of the federal and state initiative, 811 Day serves as a reminder to call 8-1-1 before digging, so underground utilities can be flagged. To further promote damage prevention in the local area, the event has been held the past two years on Aug. 11. For the first time, employees of Carroll EMC, SyncGlobal Telecom, Georgia Power, GreyStone Power Corporation and members of the West Georgia Utility Coordinating Committee (UCC) nominated utilities, municipalities and contractors who are seen following state dig laws and regulations for special honors. Awards were distributed Friday, Aug. 14. Those awarded included:

  • Southern Company Gas, 811 Day Utility Owner Award
  • City of Carrollton Water and Sewer, 811 Day Municipality Award
  • Lions Den Construction, 811 Day Construction Contractor Award

“Whether our Members are completing at-home outdoor projects or our line crews and contractors are out in the field, we always recommend they contact Georgia 811 before placing any machinery into the ground,” said Terrence Cooley, Carroll EMC Utility Coordinator who serves as both Chairman of the West Georgia UCC and state co-director for the Georgia Utilities Coordinating Council. “A simple phone call can prevent an injury or a fatality, and we wanted to recognize the local companies who go out of their way to not only practice safe digging but promote it as well.”
