Gwindola “Gwen” McGuire Hammock, age 97, passed away peacefully in the presence of family at her home in Carrollton on September 19, 2024. She was born February 10, 1927, in Boaz, Alabama to Euclid Ivy McGuire and Nora Hosmer McGuire Teal, but from the age of two, Gwen and her two older siblings lived in Carroll County with their beloved grandparents, Joe and Ida McGuire, who provided them a home throughout the Depression years.

During WWII Gwen worked at a clothing factory in Bremen where she made military uniforms for the war effort. In 1946, she married her childhood sweetheart, Marion F. Hammock, and the two established a home for their family which eventually included four daughters and one son.

As her children were growing up, Gwen was a Scout leader and PTA member for several years. She was active in her church for over 50 years, serving as Sunday school teacher and WMU member.

After retiring as manager of food service at Carrollton Junior High School, she volunteered for 12 years in the Auxiliary program at Tanner Medical Center. In her spare time she enjoyed her hobbies of photography, quilting, cooking and gardening.

For the past 20 years she has been a member of Harmony Baptist Church. During this time she also served as caretaker for her husband and youngest daughter during the years of their declining health.

In addition to her parents and grandparents, Gwen was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Marion F. Hammock; daughter, Glenda Fay Hammock; great grandson, Declan Liam Sullivan; sister, Thelma McGuire; and brother, Milford McGuire.

Survivors are daughters, Thelma H. (Roger) Carter of Prattville, AL; Rebecca H. (Rod) Sullivan and Brenda K. Hammock of Carrollton; son, Dr. Mark J. (Margie) Hammock of Heflin, AL; seven grandchildren: Melissa C. (Vic) Warren, Kimberly C. (Jim) Rocker, Michael L. (Deborah) Carter; Robin S. (Shane) Rivers, Chip (Melissa) Sullivan, Justin Hammock, and Brittney H. (David) Hulsey; great grandchildren, Rachael W. (Brandon) Hauboldt, Jennifer Warren, Abby Rivers, Jacob Rocker, Dalyn Rivers, Katie Rocker, Scarlett Warren, Isabel Rocker, Phoebe Rocker, Emmett Rocker, Riley Sullivan, Jensen Sullivan, and Spencer Hulsey.

The family will receive friends at Almon Funeral Home on Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 10am until 11am, with services immediately following at 11am in the Chapel of Almon Funeral Home with Rev. Anthony Puckett and Rev. Tommy McGuire officiating.

Interment will be in Carroll Memory Gardens with Rev. Joel McLeroy officiating.

Pallbearers will be Justin Hammock, Dalton McLeroy, Dalyn Rivers, Shane Rivers, Emmett Rocker and Chip Sullivan. Gordon McLeroy will serve as honorary pallbearer.
