Mary Shelley was just 18 years old when she began writing Frankenstein.

In the summer of 1816, Shelley was staying near Lake Geneva with poet Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and others when Byron challenged everyone to write a ghost story.

Inspired by a terrifying waking dream, Mary began the story that would become Frankenstein, published anonymously in 1818 when she was only 20.

Here’s the fascinating part: Her novel helped establish the foundations of modern science fiction more than 200 years ago!
