When Star Trek: The Original Series was being developed in the 1960s, creator Gene Roddenberry wanted characters to visit planets every episode. Originally, they were supposed to land the Enterprise each time.

The problem? Filming the Enterprise landing and taking off every week would have been far too expensive and time-consuming.

Instead, the production team came up with the transporter, using a simple visual effect made with sparkling aluminum powder and optical editing to create the iconic “beam me down” sequence.

That budget-saving decision ended up becoming one of the defining technologies of the entire franchise. Today, the transporter is one of the most recognizable concepts in science fiction—even though it originally existed because it was cheaper than filming a spaceship landing!
