UGA Extension Carroll County is excited to host a Backyard Poultry Workshop series. This series consisted of three different programs. All programs will be held at the Carroll County Ag Center, 900 Newnan Road in Carrollton. Sign up for each program is separate so please let us know when registering which program(s) you will be attending.

Our first program is our Egg Candling Class, a must for anyone who wants to sell their eggs in the state of Georgia. The Egg Candling Class is taught by a representative of the Georgia Department of Agriculture and will be on Wednesday September 12 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Participants who successfully complete the class will obtain an egg candling certificate and be legally allowed to sell their eggs. Class is free but pre-registration is required by September 7.

Our second program is the Flock Management Workshops. The workshops are on consecutive Mondays; September 24, October 1 and October 8. All sessions will be from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Our first session will be taught by Dr. Casey Ritz, University of Georgia Poultry Science Specialist, who will be speaking on foundations on backyard flock management. Our second session will be taught by Dr. Claudia Dunkley, University of Georgia Poultry Science Specialist, who will be discussing layers and their behavior. Our final session will be taught by Dr. Doug Anderson, Georgia Poultry Laboratory Veterinary Director of South GA, who will be discussing poultry disease and disease prevention. Whether you have been in backyards poultry for while or are brand new, our program has something to offer you. All of our speakers are extremely knowledgeable and well respected in their fields. There is a $30 charge to attend the program which includes meal, course materials and certification of completion. Additional family members may sign up for all three sessions for $15 which includes meal and certificate. Please pre-register by September 7.

Our third program is the Poultry Processing Workshop, which will be on Monday, October 15 from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. This workshop is for anyone who wants to learn how to process their own live birds. It will be taught by Dr. Dianna Bourassa, Auburn University Poultry Science Specialist, and Alex Tigue, Regional Extension Agents for Animal Science and Forages. Chickens will need to be provided by participants, limit two chickens per person. Space is limited to 20 participants. Cost is $25 per person which includes materials, lunch and certification of completion. Please pre-register by September 7.
