On April 2, GreyStone Power hired several new employees to fill in a few open positions within various departments. Among them came an employee named Shonder Miller. Working as a Member Services representative, Miller quickly proved to be a valuable asset to both GreyStone members and GreyStone. Her kindness, diligence and willingness to help others stretches well beyond the confines of her work at GreyStone.
Every month for the past 14 years, Miller and her husband both volunteer at least 70 hours of their time to aiding the deaf community. After spending several months learning sign language, she has made it her mission to ensure that deaf individuals are seen as valued members of society and that their deafness should not hinder their contributions. From their social needs to their financial needs, Miller does everything in her power to ensure that the deaf community is properly cared for and ministered to. “I don’t want anyone to feel that their deafness does not make them people,” she said. “The deaf are underrepresented, and I make it my mission to ensure that they are properly cared for and given the assistance that they need.”
In one instance, Miller’s help was desperately needed in order to resolve a communication issue between a mother and her deaf son. Because the mother did not know sign language, she was unable to communicate to her son that she was recently diagnosed with cancer. Upon hearing about this, Miller immediately sprang into action, providing the family with as much aid as possible. “I felt that the best approach to helping the family was to teach the mother some sign language to help alleviate the communication issue between her and her son. After some time, the mother was able to learn enough sign language to finally be able to communicate with her son more efficiently,” she said.
Miller volunteers as much as possible to help the deaf community, and her contributions are not limited to interpersonal exchanges. She also proudly serves at formal events such as the Silent Dinner Social Event, and at Deaf and Hard of Hearing Celebration Day at Six Flags Over Georgia.
Working independently with the aid of her religious organization, Miller supports deaf individuals across Georgia – and even America, and with her recent employment at GreyStone Power, she is able to provide even more assistance to hearing impaired members in need. GreyStone Power Corporation provides power and other services to 116,000 residential and commercial members in eight counties west of Atlanta, and with the employment of Shonder Miller, members with hearing disabilities are able to receive the assistance that they need.
