Simonne Crane, a GED graduate from West Georgia Technical College, has won the 26^th annual Exceptional Adult Georgia in Literacy Education (EAGLE) Award for outstanding achievement in adult education.

Crane, a resident of Lithia Springs, was one of eight finalists representing the state’s 26 registered GED preparation programs. The award was presented by Technical College System of Georgia Commissioner Matt Arthur and TCSG Assistant Commissioner for Adult Education Dr. Cayanna Good during ceremonies at the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel in Atlanta March 13.

“The 26 students that we are honoring today have all made a commitment to improving their lives through adult education,” Commissioner Arthur said. “For many of them, the path they took to get here was a challenging one. But, through hard work and determination, the road they are on now is one that will lead to a more fulfilling life and better job opportunities.”  

Crane, who was selected by a panel of judges from business and education, will receive a full scholarship to West Georgia Technical College where she is pursuing a psychology degree. In addition, her fees and books will be paid for through a stipend from the Brenda Wise Scholarship Fund, established in 2014 in memory of Brenda Wise, a lifelong supporter of adult education.

Over the coming year, Crane will travel the state as Georgia’s EAGLE ambassador for adult education, speaking to students, civic groups, legislators, and others about literacy and lifelong learning. 

“Simonne is a fabulous representative of our adult education program at West Georgia Technical College and the nearly 400 people like her who earned GEDs with us last year,” WGTC President Dr. Scott Rule said. “We know that her inspirational story will help others take that first step necessary for changing and improving their lives by earning their GED. We are proud of Simonne for being selected not only as our own Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education but as the statewide winner, where she will have the opportunity to reach even more individuals who need to hear her message.”

West Georgia Technical College is the local provider for GED preparation programs for the West Georgia region. Residents needing a GED can take free classes at WGTC that prepare them for the GED exam. WGTC has produced more GED graduates than any other provider in the state for the past two years.
