Mary Nell Smith, age 98, of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 7, 2026, at PruittPlace of Carrollton.
Born on January 21, 1928, in Carroll County, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late James C. Carter and Pearl Jordan Carter. She shared many wonderful years with her beloved husband, James Herman Smith, until his passing in May 2017.
Mrs. Smith was a lifelong member of Salem Baptist Church, where her faith remained a constant source of strength and comfort. She was also the proud owner and operator of Haralson County Gas, Inc. A gifted and meticulous bookkeeper, she possessed a remarkable eye for detail and could track down every last penny. Her dedication, strong work ethic, and careful nature were evident in everything she did.
Outside of work, Mrs. Smith found great joy in caring for her home and yard. She especially loved cutting the grass and continued doing so until she was 94 years old, a testament to her independence, determination, and energetic spirit. She lived a long and full life, leaving behind countless memories and a legacy of faithfulness, hard work, and devotion to those she loved.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her son, James Steve Smith; her grandsons, Christopher Smith and Brian Smith; and her brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her devoted son and daughter-in-law, Sammy and Angela Smith; her grandchildren, C.J. Smith and his wife, Brittany, Andy Smith, and Alicia Singleton and her husband, Jeremy; several beloved great-grandchildren; and other extended family members and friends who will cherish her memory and carry forward the values she so beautifully exemplified.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church, with Pastor John Pennington officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 until 1:45 p.m., prior to the service. Following the service, Mrs. Smith will be laid to rest in the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery beside her beloved husband.
C.J. Smith, Andy Smith, Jeremy Singleton, Gary Medlin, Jeremy Arnold, and Buck Norton will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
