Wynelle “Nell” Thompson Lewis, of Carrollton, Georgia, lived a life marked by quiet devotion, steady hands, and a deep love for her family. Born on June 25, 1933, in Carrollton, she spent her years creating a home where others were always cared for, welcomed, and remembered.
Nell graduated from Villa Rica High School in 1950 and, in her younger years, attended beauty school, a chapter of her life she rarely spoke about, but one that reflected her natural creativity. That creativity stayed with her throughout her life, most beautifully expressed through her work as a seamstress. With skill and patience, she could take what was worn or ordinary and make it useful and beautiful again. Whether she was reupholstering furniture or sewing for others in the community, her hands were rarely still, and her work was always done with care.
More than anything, Nell was devoted to her family. She poured herself into raising her children and later found great joy in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her love showed up in everyday ways, meals prepared, clothes mended, gardens tended, and time spent together. She enjoyed farming and canning, preserving not only food but the feeling of home that surrounded it. Her yard, filled with hanging baskets and blooming flowers, reflected the life she cultivated, simple, beautiful, and full.
A faithful member of Whitesburg Christian Church since 1978, Nell valued her church family and the friendships she built over the years. She was also involved with the Circle of Friends at Martin & Hightower Funeral Home and the Generators senior group, where she enjoyed fellowship and traveling with others.
She leaves behind, to cherish her memory, her children and their spouses: Sandy Meigs & Shelton Harrell, Calvin & Elaine Lewis, Twyla & James Jordan, Peggy Brock & Russell Kent, and Jamey & Tina Lewis; and along with 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Each of them carries forward the love, strength, and care she gave so freely.
Nell was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Lewis; her mother, Eugenia Chane; her father, Tom Thompson; and her seven siblings.
A funeral service will be held on April 3, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Martin & Hightower Funeral Home, with Minister Barry Shoemake officiating and music brought by her grandson, Caleb Lewis. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the hour of service. Interment will follow at Carroll Memory Gardens, with Blake Lewis, Jacob Lewis, Benjamin Brock, Carl Jordan, Collin Lewis, Chase Lewis, Sawyer Lane, and Ryan LeClair serving as pallbearers.
In lieu of traditional floral arrangements, the family requests that flowers be sent in the form of hanging baskets and plants to be placed in the yard, a fitting tribute to something that brought Nell so much joy.
Messages of condolence may be shared with the family at www.martin-hightower.com. Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel is honored to serve the Lewis family.
