Carrollton, GA — The Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum (SQTM) is proud to present two new exhibits featuring regional artists celebrating the history and geography of the south.
Matriotism: Celebrating 250 Years of Inspirational American Women Through Quilts. As the nation commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the East Cobb Quilters’ Guild is working to recognize the women who have shaped our nation, many of whose contributions have been overlooked or overshadowed. The Guild’s exhibit “Matriotism, Celebrating 250 Years of Inspirational American Women Through Quilts” celebrates women of all backgrounds, whose achievements in the arts, government, science, social and community service, and family life have shaped our nation. The sixty-two quilts in the exhibit incorporate patchwork, applique, thread painting, embroidery, and other techniques completed by hand or machine.
Georgia Mountains to Shore features the work of the Upcountry Fiber Artists which consists of six Carolina artists including Evelyn Beck, Lynne Harrill, Sara Quattlebaum, Cynthia Steward, Denny Webster, and Kathryn Weston. They work with textiles to create artworks that range from pictorial to abstract, small to large, and colorful to subdued. Their adventurous use of fabric, surface design, and quilting create exciting and innovative works that share their unique and individual southern experience. Georgia has a beautiful and diverse landscape that is abundant with natural resources. The landscape also reveals moments from our history and helps tell the stories that define Georgia’s heritage. Places and sights discovered while idly driving through the countryside, visiting the cities and coast, during quiet moments in nature, or while glimpsing a lovely vista have inspired the work in this exhibition.
“These exhibits are an exciting mix of women’s history and a celebration of regional artistry” said Amy Loch, Executive Director of the Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum. “Each quilt tells a unique story of time and place, evoke memories, while sparking imagination.”
