Everyone knows that smoking cigarettes is bad for your health. But did you know that it’s also bad for the environment?
Cigarette butts are the most commonly discarded piece of waste worldwide. It is estimated that 1.69 billion pounds (845,000 tons) of butts wind up as litter each year. That’s why Keep Carroll Beautiful — in partnership with Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and Moe’s Original BBQ — is hosting a Kick Butts Day event in Carrollton on March 21 to help educate the community about the effects of tobacco on their health and the environment.
Starting March 19, individuals and area community groups will be picking up cigarettes butts to help clean up west Georgia. On March 21 from 1 to 4 p.m., they will bring the cigarette butts to The AMP at 119 Bradley Street in Carrollton. The individual or group that collects the most cigarette butts will win $100. The winner will be announced at 4:30 p.m.
The event will also include a Butts for Butts campaign where individuals and group members who brings cigarette butts will receive a pork butt sandwich courtesy of Moe’s Original BBQ in Carrollton.
Sponsored by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Kick Butts Day is an annual celebration of youth leadership and activism in the fight against tobacco use.
