The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) and its Georgia Motorcycle Program (GMSP) support cyclists by reminding riders the necessity for high quality motorcycle gear is not something we should only think about during Motorcycle Safety Month. DDS Commissioner Spencer R. Moore says: “Always wear a DOT approved helmet, reflective gear and bright colors when riding. Have fun, but please put safety first.”

Safety statistics drive home the importance of quality motorcycle gear. Helmets saved over 1,800 lives in 2016, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA estimates an additional 800 lives could have been saved if riders had been wearing helmets at the time of their accidents.

Helmets are considered 37% effective in preventing motorcycle deaths in an accident. However, helmets are only step one. According to DDS rider coaches, in addition to helmets, riders need boots over the ankle, long sleeves (preferably leather), long pants (with over-pants), and padded gloves.

When buying a motorcycle be sure to include protective gear in your purchase. Helmets run as low as $70. Consider, also, a high-abrasion grade leather/textile jacket with Kevlar or carbon fiber shoulders, elbows, and forearms. The online magazine Motorcyclist suggests a motorcycle jacket with sections of reflective materials to ensure high visibility. Protective pants made of leather or strong textiles are often armored or padded. Some may also have gel inserts. Beyond using leather and Kevlar, riders can choose from lined pants, heat resistant pants, waterproof liners, and over pants. Riders should also make sure they have a good pair of padded or armored gloves.

So, go out and get an awesome bike, but don’t forget the safety gear! While riding can be fun and exciting, having the right gear is a lifesaving investment.

Motorcycle riders are encouraged to take a safety course at one of the GMSP approved sites and to refresh skills and knowledge regularly. More information is available at www.dds.georgia.gov.

Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program (GMSP)

The Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program (GMSP) is a part of the Georgia Department of Driver Services. In addition to offering rider education and licensing programs, the GMSP also promotes motorist awareness programs, share the road campaigns, and is focused on highway safety issues affecting Georgia motorcyclists. The GMSP directly operates training sites throughout Georgia. GMSP offers low cost, professional training to assist riders in improving their skills.
