On June 8, Caito Foods, LLC issued a recall of fresh cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and fresh-cut fruit medley products. Read the complete recall alert here.
- Recalled products were distributed to GA, IL, IN, KY, MI, MO, NC & OH.
- Sold in clear, plastic clam-shell containers at retailers including Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless, Owen’s, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods/Amazon. The investigation is ongoing to determine if products went to additional stores or states. Read the investigation update from FDA here.
- Because it is possible products shipped April 17-June 7, the fruit could still be on store shelves and this recall extends to both retailers and consumers.
- CDC reports that 60 people have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Adelaide, 31 of whom were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported and, to date, there are no illnesses reported in GA. Read the investigation update from CDC here.
- Do not eat recalled products. Check your fridge and freezer for them and throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. (If you don’t remember where you bought pre-cut melon, don’t eat it and throw it away.)
- Retailers should not sell or serve recalled pre-cut melon products distributed by Caito Foods Distribution, Gordon Food Service, and SpartanNash Distribution.
