Attorney General Chris Carr today issued the following statement after President Donald Trump announced his nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to fulfill the U.S. Supreme Court vacancy created by Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement:
“I commend President Trump for his nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the U.S. Supreme Court,” said Attorney General Chris Carr. “Judge Kavanaugh is a well-respected jurist who will apply the law as written and enforce the text, structure and original understanding of the Constitution. I congratulate Judge Kavanaugh and his family and hope for a quick confirmation by the U.S. Senate.”
A proven leader and mentor, of Judge Kavanaugh’s 48 clerks, 39 have gone on to clerk for the U.S. Supreme Court, including Georgia Supreme Court Justice Britt Grant who was also on the President’s list of potential U.S. Supreme Court nominees and is currently being considered for a position on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
Judge Kavanaugh has served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since 2006, authoring more than 300 opinions, including 11 that have been affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court. Before becoming a judge, he served in the George W. Bush administration, first as an Associate Counsel and then Senior Associate Counsel, and subsequently as Assistant to the President and Staff Secretary.
A graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School, Judge Kavanaugh clerked on the U.S. Supreme Court for Justice Kennedy, and for judges on the Third and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeals. Judge Kavanaugh also served as a Counsel for the Office of Independent Counsel under Ken Starr and as a Partner at Kirkland & Ellis, LLP.
Judge Kavanaugh lives in Maryland with his wife Ashley and their two daughters.
