JThe Carrollton Center for the Arts makes its first foray into the world of opera on February 9 with the classic music, story and characters of La Boheme.
“We are thrilled to add opera to the wide range of theatrical experiences presented by the Carrollton Center for the Arts,” said the center’s director, Tim Chapman. “And there is no better production to start with than La Boheme. It is the world’s most popular opera.”
Performed in English by Peach State Opera and accompanied by local vocalists, La Boheme, follows a colorful group of young artists (the “bohemians” of the title) as they experience love and loss in 1920s Paris.
La Boheme was composed by Giacomo Puccini. Its 1896 premiere was conducted by famed conductor Arturo Toscanini, then only 28 years old. The show has become part of the standard Italian opera repertory and contains some of the genre’s most memorable arias and musical scenes. Recognized by many as the world’s most frequently performed opera, La Boheme has inspired many adaptations and other productions, such as Jonathan Larson’s 1996 musical, Rent.
Chapman said, with its romantic music, setting and themes, “La Boheme is perfect for a date night, just before Valentine’s Day.”
