The drama of history comes alive with Montgomery: The Musical at the Carrollton Center for the Arts, February 16 – 18.
Written by Dennis Blackmon and Regina Wells, this musical is the epic love story of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King, framed by the fires of the American Civil Rights era.
“A newlywed couple find themselves thrust into the battle against segregation and racial injustice,” said Blackmon. “They must discover an inner strength that neither knew they had. They soon learn that, together, with God, they can face any challenge.”
The young couple leaves their safe, prestigious life in Atlanta for what should be the quiet town of Montgomery, Alabama. Martin is thrust into the spotlight, leading what turns out to be a year-long bus boycott as the two become parents and the city explodes with the fight for civil rights.
“Theater is a great tool in helping people understand important stories about our history,” said Carrollton Center for the Arts Manager Tim Chapman. “Our local playwrights have done a beautiful job of staging a musical that educates us on this important time in our history.”
Montgomery: The Musical is directed by Tom Jones, who points out the show is the only musical that celebrates and chronicles the birth of the Freedom Movement in America.
This show is sponsored by FAST Project.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for youth and can be purchased online at carrolltonarts.com, by phone at 770-838-1083 or at the center’s box office at 251 Alabama Street.
