John C. Hearn, 86, of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away peacefully at home on February 19, 2025. He was born on July 7, 1938, in Lee County, Alabama, to the late Joseph Howell Hearn and Velma Kaylor Hearn.

On August 4, 1961, John married the love of his life, Helen Smith. Three months later, he entered the United States Air Force, where he proudly served until 1965, followed by two years in the Air Force Reserves.

John completed his bachelor’s degree in education from Southern Wesleyan University, followed by a master’s degree in educational administration from Clemson University. He later obtained a specialist degree from the University of Alabama, further advancing his expertise in the field. Throughout his career in education, John dedicated himself to the Carroll County Schools system. He began his journey as a teacher at Sand Hill Elementary School, and ended his career by returning to the classroom at Central Middle School.

In addition to his teaching roles, John took on leadership responsibilities as an administrator at Temple Elementary School and Central Elementary School. After decades of service to the community, John retired in 2000, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and excellence in education.

In his retirement, John immersed himself in the athletics community at Holy Ground Baptist Academy, where he dedicated countless hours to supporting the school’s events. He worked diligently at concession stands and cheered for the Stallions during their games. Beyond his involvement with athletics, John was a long-standing member of Holy Ground Baptist Church. His commitment to the academy and the church exemplified his love for the community and his desire to positively impact.

John had a love for traveling, particularly when it involved spending quality time with his family and friends. He relished taking beach trips, where he created lasting memories with his closest friends, his nephew and niece, Stan and Ruth Cordell. However, some of his most treasured adventures were to the mountains and the enchanting world of Disney, where he enjoyed unforgettable moments with his daughter, Lorrie, son-in-law, Bart, and his beloved granddaughter, Emily.

John and his wife, Helen, devoted themselves to caring for Emily during her early years, nurturing a unique bond that brought immense joy to his life. He delighted in sharing stories and engaging in playful activities with her, fostering a loving and meaningful connection. Above all, John was a devoted family man who placed the happiness of his loved ones at the forefront of his life. His warmth, kindness, and devotion will be cherished and greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his beloved family: his wife, Helen Smith Hearn; daughter and son-in-law, Lorrie and Bart Gillespie; granddaughter, Emily Gillespie; brother, Joe Hearn; sister, Dale Hearn Davis; nephew and niece, Stan and Ruth Cordell; and many extended family members and friends.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Dixon and Martha Schuppe.

A funeral service to honor and celebrate John’s life will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 3:30 PM at Holy Ground Baptist Church, with Brother Kelly Runels officiating. Interment will follow at Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery, with pallbearers Jamie Perry, Greg Adams, Chris Brown, Travis York, Chris Farmer, and Luke Wilson.

The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 2:00 PM until the service begins.
