Carrollton Writers Guild poets give voice to their own words at the Carrollton Center for the Arts, April 5.
Local Voices: An Evening of Poetry is organized by the Carrollton Writers Guild’s Just Poetry writing group and features eight poets from the group — Dr. Cecilia C. Lee, Chuck Wanager, Dr. Richard Anderson, Dr. Robert C. Covel, Carolyn Houghton, Gil Royal, Dr. Marc J. LaFountain and Dr. Eleanor Wolfe Hoomes — reading their own poetry aloud. Dr. Elyse Wheeler will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
“The poets presenting at Local Voices are an eclectic group,” said Sue Lee, the event’s director. “They are passionate about their work and it really shows.”
The evening will begin with a reception featuring wine and hors d’oeuvres at 6:00 p.m. in the theater lobby, followed by poetry readings, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
“There’s something special about hearing a writer’s words spoken in their own voice,” said Arts Superintendent Tim Chapman. “It’s kind of like listening in on the poet’s process, hearing how their words sounded to them at the time of creation.”
Through a variety of programs, the Carrollton Writers Guild helps promote the literary arts in the community. Membership in the guild costs $25.
