On June 26, over 4000 square dancers from all over the world will visit the Atlanta metro area for the National Square Dance convention, held in Georgia for the first time in its 68-year history. A group of dancers from China have obtained their visas to visit the USA for this historic dance convention, along with dozens from Germany and others from around Europe and Australia. Interestingly, Modern Western Square Dancing is called in English worldwide so dancers can travel and dance anywhere.
June 2019 has been proclaimed Square Dance Month in Georgia by Governor Brian Kemp, setting the stage for the National Square Dance Convention®, June 26-29 at the Cobb Galleria Center and Renaissance Waverly Hotel, just northwest of Atlanta. “Square Dancing, the Official Folk Dance of the State of Georgia, has a long tradition of providing wholesome entertainment for Georgians of all ages who participate in this exciting and friendly activity,” states the proclamation.
The 68th convention in Georgia is expected to have one of the highest number in attendance in the last 10 years.
