James Lamar Stephens passed away on April 12, 2026, at the age of 56.
Born on June 23, 1969, Lamar was raised in the Mt. Zion community and graduated from Mt. Zion High School with the Class of 1987.
Outside of his work, Lamar found his greatest enjoyment in the simple things. He loved being outdoors, whether hunting in the quiet of the woods or fishing and enjoying the stillness that came with it. Those were the places he felt most at ease.
He was also a devoted sports fan, especially of the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves. Lamar kept up with games, stats, and seasons with genuine interest, and he enjoyed sharing that passion with others.
Lamar is survived by his mother, Pamela Stephens; his sons, Zachary and Devin, and their families; his sister and brother-in-law, Kandi and Scotty Nicholson; his nieces and nephews, Britnie and Jeffrey Brown, Stephen and Alex Nicholson, Hannah and Jacob Hollis, and Sara Nicholson; as well as six great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Johnnie Lamont Stephens, and his grandparents, Roy and Florence Stephens.
Lamar will be remembered as someone who appreciated life’s quieter moments, time outdoors, a good game, and familiar surroundings. He leaves behind many who knew him in different seasons of life, each carrying their own memories of him.
A graveside service to honor Lamar’s life will be held on April 15, 2026, at 4:00 PM at Five Points Church Cemetery in Carrollton, Georgia, with Pastor Joe Driver officiating. Wade Bass, Randall Williams, Chris McGraw, Buck Norton, Neil Hendrix, and Michael Thompson will serve as pallbearers.
Those who knew Lamar are invited to gather, reflect, and remember a life lived in his own way and on his own terms.
Lamar will be deeply missed and remembered by those who knew him.
