Theta Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. recently awarded $15,760 in scholarships.Alpha Kappa AlphaSorority, Incorporated, is an international service organization that was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC in 1908. It is the oldest Greek-lettered organization established by African-American college-educated women.  Since its founding over a century ago, Alpha Kappa Alpha’s mission is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of “Service to All Mankind”.

In the words of Oprah Winfrey, “Education is the key to unlocking the world, a passport to freedom.” As part of its commitment to higher education, Theta Omicron Omega Chapter annually awards scholarships to deserving Northwest Georgia high school seniors. According to Mrs. Sherry Turner, chapter president, “Each recipient successfully demonstrates academic achievement, exhibits leadership ability and participates in community service activities.”The five scholarship recipients and award amounts are as follows:

Miss Rachael Beeman (Rome High School) ~ $3,025

Miss MicaylaGoodgame (Pepperell High School) ~ $ 750

Miss Kymberly House (Rome High School) ~ $1,140

Miss Aja Morgan (Rome High School) ~ $5, 225

Mr. Calvin Freeman (Rome High School) ~ $4,465

Imani McCluskey (Rockmart High School) ~ $1,155
