Carrollton High School Performing Arts captured its second consecutive region title in the Georgia High School Association One-Act Play competition held Saturday for its performance of “Lafayette No. 1,” a play about the “forgotten orphans” of New Orleans whose parents died in the 1816 yellow fever epidemic.
The story’s message hits close to home as the world grapples with a pandemic that has delayed or canceled most public and competitive events. The GHSA delayed one-act play competitions, usually held in October, until safety mitigation measures could be outlined for participating schools, including banning public audiences, frequent sanitizing, and other requirements.
In addition to capturing the 7-AAAAA crown, CHS junior Greer Harper, pictured below, earned the Best Actress award for her portrayal of “Lizzy Landry” and two other cast members, senior Eli Lucio and sophomore Tai Jackson, “Harris Carroll” and “William Limon (MOAB)” respectively, were named to the region All-Star Cast.
Dalton High School placed second in the competition with its production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and third was East Paulding for “Black Comedy.”
“I am so proud of these students and the hard work they put into this show,” said Tommy Cox, CHS Performing arts director. “It’s a privilege to tell a great story to an appreciative audience and we look forward to taking our team to state in a few weeks.”
State competition will be held Saturday, Feb. 20, at Veterans High School in Warner Robins.
