Cellist, singer and songwriter Shana Tucker’s genre-melding blend of jazz, classical, folk, pop and R&B will bring heat to a winter evening, this Saturday, at the Carrollton Center for the Arts.

“Shana Tucker is a fantastic cellist, but for me it is her vocal performance that exudes a soulful vibe that transports you to a place of comfort,” Arts Superintendent Tim Chapman said. “She engages the audience as if they were all her life-long friends. This is a show that you will not want to miss.”

A New York native, Tucker studied cello at Howard University in Washington, DC, and received her degree in Violoncello Performance from CUNY-Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, where she studied with master cellist, Marion Feldman. After the release of her debut CD, ShiNE, in 2011, Tucker was cellist/vocalist for Cirque du Soleil’s Las Vegas show, KÀ, for five years. She performs and records with saxophonist/composer Bennie Maupin, flutist/composer Nicole Mitchell, and the Grammy-nominated NuSoul collective, The Foreign Exchange, among others.

“I’m intrinsically drawn to ‘real’ instruments, with resonance, tone and depth that can sound without amplification,” said Tucker. “I always try to set a tone of acoustic intimacy so the music, performers and the audience feel close and tangible, no matter the size the venue.”

Tucker is also a teaching artist, with more than 20 years’ experience in community engagement, workshops, lesson planning and artist residency facilitation. She was recently named the first-ever Artist in Residence at the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts in Asheville, NC, for their 2019-2020 concert season.

She has served on review panels and advisory committees for arts organizations across the country, including United Arts Council in Raleigh, South Arts in Atlanta, Durham Arts Council and the Nevada Arts Council. Tucker is a board member for Blair Publisher, a North Carolina-based organization that publishes diverse minority writers, and serves on the advisory board for the annual Washington, DC, Women in Jazz Festival.

Tickets are $18 for adults, $10 for youth (12 and under) and can be purchased online at https://cprcad.myboxoffice.us, by phone at (770) 838-1083 or at the Center for the Arts box office at 251 Alabama Street in Carrollton.
